Senate Presidency: I Have No Ill Feelings Towards Ndume, Goje, Says Lawan

Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, has said he has no ill feelings towards Senator Ali Ndume or Senator Danjuma Goje over their ambition to contest for the position of the next Senate president in the ninth assembly.

Senator Ahmad Lawan, an All Progressives Congress (APC) senator, representing Yobe North senatorial zone,, made the remark when he was a guest at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum in Abuja.

NAN reported that the APC had zoned the Senate president’s slot to the north east where the trio of Lawan, Ndume and Goje hailed from.

However, the ruling party endorsed the candidacy of Lawan for the position.

But Ndume (APC- Borno), and Goje, had stood their grounds on vying for the number one seat of the Senate.

“I want to thank my party and my leaders for having confidence in me. I want to assure everyone very seriously because it is a burden that my party feels I can carry.

“By the grace of God and with the support of my colleagues in the APC, PDP and YPP in the Senate, we should be able to deliver that burden very well.

“I have no hard feelings against my brothers from the North-east contesting. What the party and the leaders did was to say I have been recommended or I have been endorsed. That is a preference; that the party has a preference is not to say that others cannot do the job.

But definitely, the party, our leaders have some reasons why they think we are most suitable for this job,” Lawan said.

The lawmaker, however, said the decision of his colleagues to contest the position with him was constitutional.

“But this is democracy; you cannot shut out somebody if that person feels he has the right to run and of course, the constitution allows for that.

“But definitely, the party and the leaders have spoken and we are not resting on our oars.

“We are going from door to door; we are talking to all the senators-elect. We talk to the APC senators, PDP senators and YPP senator, believing that we are going to work with them.

“Therefore, we need to bridge the gap and we need to know ourselves even before we get there,’’ he said.

According to him, the effort is yielding fruits because “majority of the senators feel that really we have something to offer and that by the grace of God when we are able to make it, we can, together, work out that desirous legislative interventions of the time for the executive to have something to work on.

SOUTH EAST GROUP ENDORSES SENATOR AHMAD LAWAN, for 9th NASS LEADERSHIP

The Igbo Youth Assembly, Worldwide (IYA), a socio-cultural organization, have endorsed Senator Ahmad Lawan and Hon Chike Okafor for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of the 9th National Assembly.

The group stated that it took the new position against the earlier position where it backed the zoning of the leadership positions to the South-east region.

In a statement issued at the end of a meeting in Umuahia, jointly signed by the president Ifeanyi Nwaudunna and the publicity secretary, Magnus Abara, the group said it was out to support the position of the party.

The group said that the choice of Lawan and Okafor as leaders at the National Assembly would stabilise the polity and unite the country for development.

According to the statement, “the country will make progress if the presidency and the national assembly forged closer relations in developing policies for the development of the country”.

The earlier demand that the positions of both the Senate president and deputy be zoned to the South-east was retracted but call for party leaders to close ranks on the issue.

The group called on senators and members of the House of Representatives especially those of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to validate the party’s endorsement of Lawan and Okafor for credible representative, equity and fairness.

It described the pair of Lawan and Okafor as true party men who would leave no stone unturned in promoting the ideology of the ruling party.

Senate Presidenfy: Lawyers’ group urges Youths to back Senator Ahmad Lawan

Lagos— The league of Patriotic Lawyers has called on Nigerians to support the aspiration of  Senator Ahmad  Lawan to become the Senate President, saying his candidacy holds prospects for the youths.

Briefing newsmen yesterday in Lagos during a visit to corps members serving in Etiosa Local Government Area, Chairman of the league and former students Union leader of University of Benin, Mr. Abubakar Yesufu said that  Lawan stands out among the duo, senators Ndume and Goje.

At the event, Yesufu commended the Inspector of Local Government, Minimah Ebiere, describing  her as dedicated, focused and goal driven.”

He further described Senator Lawan as the most experienced having been in the senate since 2007.

In addition, Yesufu described Lawan as urbane and highly cosmopolitan.

His words:”The choice of Lawan goes beyond the APC as a party. It should be bipartisan.

“This highly cerebral senator comes with robust resume and flourishing experience to direct the affairs of the senate. “

Governor Yahaya Bello endorses Lawan/Gbajabiamila for 9th Assembly

Governor Yahaya Bello has declared his unalloyed support for the endorsement of Sen. Ahmad Lawan and Hon Femi Gbajabiamila as the heads of the 9th Senate and House of Representatives respectively.

The Governor who made this known while on a courtesy visit to the National Leader of the party, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos said the decision of the party remains his position on the next National Assembly leadership.

He said both of them are experienced and qualified to lead the Upper and the Lower Chambers.

“You are our National Leader and we are your children. You have set the agenda and we shall ensure we make it a reality.

“I supported Hon Gbajabiamila in 2015 but it was unfortunate that we lost out. This time around, we shall make sure the decision of the party prevails by electing the two of them to work with Mr President to move the nation forward.

“We have two Senators-elect from my State and seven House of Representatives members-elect. They will listen to us. Even the two others who are in ADC and PDP will be lobbied to support us”.

Governor Bello said his loyalty to the party and the National Leader of the party is not in doubt and that he will continue to build the party to remain unbeatable in Kogi State.

It would be recalled that the Governor led the party to a resounding victory in the 2019 general elections, a feat which is statistically better than the performance of the party in 2015.

Governor Bello inherited a House of Assembly dominated by the PDP in 2015. He wooed majority of them back to the APC and was able to ensure a clean sweep of the 25 seats in the House of Assembly in 2019. Political pundits said such feat is “unprecedented” in the history of the State.

A reliable source who is an aide of the Governor said the meeting between the National Leader of the party and the Governor was successful.

“It was a successful meeting. I am aware the Governor has told the two Senators-elect and the seven Reps-elect to support both Lawan and Gbajabiamila and they have pledged to do so.

“Asiwaju thanked the Governor for being a true party man and assured him of the party’s determination to retain Kogi in November.

Asiwaju said the performance of the Governor in the 2019 general elections was excellent and urged him to continue to pull everyone together for the greatness of the State”.

On whether the National Leader will support the Governor’s re-election, the source said APC is known for rewarding excellent performance.

“The Governor has done well politically and administratively. He will enjoy the support of all party leaders”, he said.

Senators-elect Are Rooting For Senator Ahmad Lawan Senate Presidency – Umar

How does it feel to be elected as a Senator?

It’s exciting and wonderful with some level of anxiety. There is also the massive expectation from my people. My senatorial district has so much hope when they gave me the massive votes they did, but I’m very happy to find myself in this position.

What are some of the challenges you faced prior to winning the election?

I will say, I’m one of the luckiest politicians in the world. The people wanted me and so, they made life easy for me.  It wasn’t too challenging other than the fact that my senatorial district is very large. It means I needed to move around to meet people. I slept in uncomfortable places and eat anything I see. But I was able to escape the treachery of politics because the people wanted me there.

Would you say the elections were free and fair?

From what I saw, where I voted and participated, you couldn’t have had a freer and fair election. It couldn’t be better than what we had in my constituency. It was peaceful and people voted for who they wanted. I gathered it was the same thing in the other local governments, the same thing replicated.  So I can tell you that the elections in Kwara state were as free and fair as elections can be.

What should be the expectations of your people?

First and foremost, they should expect a senator that will be available for them. The people trusted me with this responsibility, it means that anything that will make life easy for the masses I will champion it, especially if it is healthcare and infrastructure.

Coming back to the state of the nation, since the Federal Government indicated interest to commence gradual removal of fuel subsidy, Nigerians have been experiencing some difficulties in buying petrol.  Are you in support or not?

From my understanding of the now, I will say that the Federal Government should slow down on its plan to remove subsidy because the Federal Government, which is led by APC has increased fuel price immediately it came to power in 2015 and Nigerian people cooperated with them. We are happy that the fuel chain has been stabilised, but life is difficult in Nigeria right now. The supply chain of fuel generally affects everything in Nigeria. I will advise that they slow down and look for another alternative. However, may be if I have a better information and better understanding, I might tell you something different or have a different opinion, but I don’t think we need to increase the suffering of the people.

The APC have not delivered on most of the promises they made to Nigerians in 2014 and now they are about to start a second term, don’t you think this is a sign of failure.

I have a totally contrary opinion. This government have fulfilled all their campaign promises.

In which areas?

In terms of security, I have listen to the campaign promises of this president and he never spoke on any bogus thing he will do. He specify that he will improve on security, economy and fight corruption. These are the key things I know. When the government came in, their key challenge was boko haram, armed robbery and kidnapping but boko haram has been curtail very much. Those in the north/east will tell you that, life is better since the coming of Buhari.  They can go to their farms now and do their activities. Of course there are some challenges here and there but it has really improved significantly. On corruption, I will tell you it is a difficult one.

What is your take on the fight against corruption?

Fighting corruption is a very complicated business. It’s not just the government that will fight corruption. Yes, they have to take a lead and put necessary things in place, but other people like the judiciary must play their roles to help the government fight corruption to its logical conclusion. If they don’t, they will be sabotaging the government efforts, most importantly the people have to be interested in that fighting. They have to expose those who are corrupt instead of sympathising with them. The government has played its part at whatever level they can even though I believe they can do better. If you ask anybody in government and the person is sincere, he will tell you that, corruption has reduce in this country. You cannot win the fight against corruption overnight, you can only do the one you can do, so it is succeeding. Take the BVN and TSA for example, it might not be perfect but TSA has succeeded in reducing and monitoring government’s revenues and now the government knows where its money is, without looking for their money in banks.

Talking about the imcoming Senate, judging from the aspirants that have indicated interests in the seat of the Senate President. Who among them would you want to emerge?

I’m part of this process. There is a global standard about the leadership in the parliament and that standard is final. The largest party’s leader in the House automatically becomes the Senate President or Speaker of the parliament. The same thing happens in the USA. Right now Ahmed Lawan is the leader of the majority senators in the Senate, there should be no challenge over that. It’s a global practice. APC has a majority in the Senate and the caucus has a leader. So he should be the Senate President. Fortunately for Lawan he is one of the most competent senators we have in the Red Chamber as of today. He is also one of the highest ranking senators. He is experienced and has been loyal to the APC, it’s just natural for him to be the Senate President.

But does it bother you that the party is endorsing a particular candidate?

The party chairman is doing what is expected of him to say. The most important thing is that, he is not imposed on us because everybody that is coming to the Senate has pedigree. They are coming from somewhere. You can see there are even former governors coming to the senate.  So nobody can impose anybody on somebody like me. Rather Ahmed Lawan whether by design, luck or was at the right place at the right time is the most experienced senator in the Senate. So the party chairman is just re-echoing that sentiment.

Given your background in the health sector, would you say this government is doing enough in that sector?

No, I don’t think this government is doing enough. Our health infrastructure is terrible. Where are the personnel and drugs? It is because of these massive gap that international organizations try to bring us aids in order to attempt to solve this problem. But I can tell you if this government divert all our budget to the health sector, it will still not be enough to turn around the sector in four years. But we need to start doing something now. I believe this government has things in stock for the sector.

Are you not worried with the rate doctors are leaving Nigeria for greener pastures?

I’m very worried but the best the government can do is to fix the problem. Every doctor wants to work in hospital where the equipment are good. He want a good life with the ability to take care of his family.  But if you cannot provide these for them, you don’t expect them to stay. Of course we should be worried because what happens to our people here? Who will take care of them? The issue of medical tourism is becoming worrisome even to the government. It is worrisome because the money being spent in medical tourism is used to develop other nations’ health sector. They are also carrrying jobs away from Nigeria, but you must know that the responsibility of everybody is to survive first before any other thing.

How does it feel to be elected as a Senator?

Lawan On Senate Presidency: Many PDP Senators Are Supporting Me

Ahmad Lawan, majority leader of the senate, says “so many” senators in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are in support of his bid for senate presidency.

Speaking as a guest at the NAN forum on Thursday in Abuja, Lawan, who is of the All Progressives Congress (APC), promised not to let his colleagues down if elected.

The senator has been endorsed by the leadership of the APC as well as President Muhammadu Buhari but that did not stop two of his colleagues in the north-east – Ali Ndume and Danjuma Goje – from also joining the race.

But Lawan said he is not worried having opposition from his own region. The senate leader is from Yobe state.

“In fact, APC senators, almost everyone is on this project and we have sat and spoken and talked one-on-one,” he said.

“So many PDP senators are in support of this project. In fact, YPP is fully on board, Sen. Ifeanyi Uba from Anambra. And we believe that this is the way to go.

“We are going from door to door; we are talking to all the senators-elect. We talk to the APC senators, PDP senators and YPP senator, believing that we are going to work with them.

”I want to assure everyone very seriously because it is a burden that my party feels I can carry. By the grace of God and with the support of my colleagues in the APC, PDP and YPP in the Senate, we should be able to deliver that burden very well.

“I have no hard feelings against my brothers from the north east contesting. What the party and the leaders did was to say I have been recommended or I have been endorsed.

”That is a preference; that the party has a preference is not to say that others cannot do the job.

But definitely, the party, our leaders have some reasons why they think we are most suitable for this job.”

He added if elected, the senate would ensure that public funds are judiciously utilised through its oversight function.

According to him, “we want to see public funds being properly applied and deployed, we want to see less of embezzlement or no embezzlement of public funds.

“This is because sometimes not the quantum of funds that you have but how you are able to ensure proper and prudent deployment of those resources that matters. We had so much resources in the past but bulk of those resources were embezzled.”

North East Dev’t Commission, Reward For Massive Vote For Me — Buhari

ABUJA —PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari yesterday inaugurated the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), headed by Major General Paul Tarfa (retd) as chairman.

The NEDC has the mandate of rebuilding the North East ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency.

Inaugurating the board at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting, the President said that the establishment of the Commission was in appreciation of the massive electoral support he received from the zone in 2015 and 2019 general elections.

The board he said would be the focal organization to assess, coordinate and harmonize and report all the intervention programmes and initiatives of the federal government to avoid duplication of efforts and waste of scarce resources.

“You must, therefore, constantly liaise with the relevant federal ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs, states and other development partners for the implementation of all programmes and initiatives and proper utilization of funds released for intervention in the zone.”

He further said that the inauguration of the NEDC was in fulfilment of the pledge of his administration to the people of the North East Geo-Political Zone and as part of the strategy for regenerating the socio-economic potentials of the Geo-Political Zone after the devastation of the Boko-Haram insurgency.

The president recalled that the Commission was established by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) (Establishment) Act, 2017 which he assented to on 25th October 2017.

According to him, the Commission is charged with the responsibility of among other things, receiving and managing funds allocated by the Federal Government of Nigeria and donors for the resettlement, rehabilitation, integration and construction of roads, houses and business premises of victims of insurgency as well as taking care of the menace of poverty, illiteracy, ecological problems and other related environmental and developmental challenges in the North East States.

The President emphasized that the 11 Member Governing Board had been carefully constituted based on the proven track records of hard work and integrity of members.

He added, “It is, therefore, the expectation of Government and people of the Zone that you will rapidly and systematically set to work to address all areas of your mandates in a fair and equitable manner.

“To demonstrate the commitment of this Government to your effective takeoff, a provision of N10 billion has been made in the 2019 budget. It is my expectation that you will judiciously apply these resources.”

The President charged the Chairman and Members to as a matter of urgency conduct a comprehensive survey of all states in the zone to determine the reconstruction and rehabilitation needs of all the socio-economic sectors of the zone and develop an intervention master plan based on the outcome of the assessments.

NASS leadership: APC dismisses PDP, insists on open ballot

The All Progressives Congress has insisted on open ballot for the election of principal officers for the Ninth National Assembly.

The insistence came even as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party argued that the election should be through secret ballot to safeguard the independence of lawmakers in choosing their leaders.

The APC National Working Committee has zoned the Senate President to the North East and endorsed Senator Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North) for the position.

But Senators Ali Ndume and Danjume Gone from Borno and Gombe states, respectively, have resolved to contest against the wish of the party leadership.

The APC national leadership had also zoned the position of the Speaker to the South West and endorsed Femi Gbajabiamila from Lagos for the position.  But some lawmakers from North Central are protesting against the decision. The opposition members are waiting to take advantage of the discordant tunes to elect their preferred candidates against the wish of the ruling party.

They have therefore insisted that the secret ballot be used in electing the principal officers of the National Assembly to guarantee the independence of the lawmakers in choosing their leaders.

But speaking with our correspondent in Abuja, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, challenged the PDP to declare where it stood on the election of principal officers and stop seeking unnecessary attention on a matter for the ruling party.

He said, “That is the extent to which they (PDP) are democratic. Why secret ballot? What are they afraid of? That they cannot stand by what they believe in and for the public to know where they stand.

“Secret ballot is not known to any sanitary democratic practice. It is only people with hidden agenda that look for secret ballot anywhere. If you believe in something you should be able to stand for it.”

He added, “We understand that the PDP has never stood for anything good; so, we know why they want secret ballot.

“But in any case, what we are doing as the ruling party and a majority party and the party that has the responsibility to superintend over the affairs of the National Assembly is kept under wraps.

“On the day of the election, the nation will get to see what the majority represents.”
