2019 election: IBB denies asking Buhari to step down

Nigeria’s former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, has reacted to a media report which alleged that he advised President Buhari to step down ahead of the general election

– Babangida said the story was far from the truth because he has no social media account

– The former military president, however, advised the social media community and the general public to be wary of the fake accounts and mischievous fake online news

A former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has debunked social media reports crediting him to have advised President Muhammadu Buhari to step down ahead of the forthcoming election.

Daily Trust reports that an online platform had alluded to a social media account where the former military president was alleged to have advised the president to step aside and rather support a younger candidate.

Legit.ng gathered the former military president said he did not have any social media account as being speculated by many Nigerians.

In the story titled, “Babaginda advises Buhari: please step down”, IBB was quoted to have said: “In the fullness of our present realities, we need to cooperate with President Muhammadu Buhari to complete his term of office on May 29 and collectively prepare the way for new generation of leaders to assume the mantle of leadership of the country.

“While offering this advice, I speak as a stakeholder, former president, concerned Nigerian and a patriot who desires to see new paradigms in our shared commitment to get this country running.

“While saying this also, I do not intend to deny President Buhari his inalienable right to vote and be voted for, but there comes a time in the life of a nation when personal ambition should not override national interest.”

The media office of IBB on Monday, February 18, however, said that the former leader has no social media account and couldn’t have turned to same to air his views on the state of affairs in the country.

“The attention of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida GCFR, has been drawn to the existence of several twitter handles and “social media” purportedly owned by the former military president.

“The media office of the former military president wishes to inform the general public, particularly social media community that General Babangida currently has no twitter handle or any social media platform.

“Also, we wish to state categorically that the twitter handles bearing the name and photographs of General Babangida are fake and targeted at misleading unsuspecting members of the public,” the statement said.

The statement reiterated that General Babangida is an elder statesman and a peacemaker, adding that he couldn’t have articulated a position as malicious as the said story.

The statement advised the social media community and the general public to be wary of the fake accounts, mischievous fake online news and discountenance whatever message conveyed therein.

Buhari doesn’t need APC gov candidate to win Ogun — Akinlade

The governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples’ Movement in Ogun State, Adekunle Akinlade, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari does not need Dapo Abiodun to win the presidential election in Ogun State.

Abiodun is the governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state.

Akinlade, however told our correspondent in his hometown in Ipokia Local Government Area of the state, that the APM, which had adopted Buhari as its presidential candidate, would deliver the state for him.

“My President does not need Dapo Abiodun to win the election in Ogun. The APM will deliver Ogun State for Buhari.

“We know the people are with us and we believe that my adoption of the President’s candidacy won’t affect my governorship aspiration because what we need is to tell the people that we know what we are doing,” he said.

The governorship candidate also said he believed that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to postpone the election earlier slated for last Saturday by a week was in the nation’s interest.

He said, “I want to believe strongly that the postponement would have been for the right reasons and in the best interest of our nation.

“A week is just six days from now and we have no doubt that all is well.

“For me, I have told my coordinators in all local governments to remain calm and trust the system.”

Akinlade, while commenting on the APM’s adoption of Buhari, said the fracas that occurred during the presidential campaign of the APC in the state was due to the party’s insensitivity to the will of the people.

He said, “We were there that day because we have adopted the President. He is our President and we must come out to show solidarity to him.

“But it is sad for them to come out at that point in time to insult the sensibility of our people.”

“What we believe as a people is that we need to speak and tell them that they cannot come to Ogun State and insult our sensibility by telling the people to their faces that ‘we have done what we have done to you and we are here to spit on your face again.’

“The party agreed over four years ago that the governorship of Ogun State in 2019 would be zoned to Ogun West and that was what Governor Ibikunle Amosun stood by.

“I emerged the consensus candidate from Ogun West and was presented to the party and to the governor. After that, Abiodun and some other aspirants from Ogun East insisted on direct primaries and we accepted as democrats and we went for the primaries and I won.”

Imo APC says Buhari will win Saturday’s election

The Imo State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress is optimistic that President Muhammadu Buhari will win the February 23 presidential election.

The party is however concerned that the rescheduled presidential and National Assembly polls would witness voter apathy, especially in the South-East.

Briefing journalists in Owerri, the state capital on Monday, the state chairman of the APC, Daniel Nwafor, said the party was working assiduously to ensure that Buhari wins.

He said possible low turnout of voters was also an issue of concern.

Nwafor said, “We are very confident that President Buhari will win on Saturday. We are re-strategising to ensure that Buhari wins convincingly in Imo State. But we are concerned about voter apathy, especially in the South-East.

“No doubt, there will be large turnout of voters in the North and West on the rescheduled date, but here in the East, there is possibility of low turnout of voters.

“Our people will prefer to sit at home to watch televisions having been disappointed by INEC last week Saturday, but I pray they prove me  wrong.

“We are not relenting. We are mobilising our members ahead of the rescheduled date. We are having series of meetings. I will be meeting with the LGA chairmen after now. I just finished meeting with the ward chairmen.

“All these meetings are targeted at ensuring that President Muhammadu Buhari wins convincingly.”

I Owe My Appointment To Buhari, Not Saraki —Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed , says he owes his appointment as minister to President Muhammadu Buhari and no one else .

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the minister said it was “laughable’’ that anyone would seek to take credit for his appointment .

Mohammed was reacting to a statement by Dr Doyin Okupe the Special Adviser ( Media) to the Director – General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council , in which he gave credit to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki for the minister’ s appointment .

The minister said that the entire statement by Okupe , “is nothing but fiction writing , for which he deserves a hall of infamy award ( in the fiction writing segment ).

“Not one of the claims he made in his statement is true. ’’

Mohammed challenged Okupe to make available to Nigerians any evidence he might have to support his assertion that the President sought the permission of Saraki to appoint him as minister.

“We understand that Dr Okupe ’ s cheap attempt at mud- throwing is nothing but a proxy fight, rooted deeply in the politics of Kwara State .

“We are aware that Okupe ’ s boss is feeling the heat emanating from the ` O To Ge ’ ( enough is enough ) movement in Kwara State.

“ And that even the strongest of men will become disoriented and disillusioned at losing the support of people who once venerated them to high heavens .

“But that is a self- inflicted wound for which Okupe ’ s boss , an acclaimed slave master, has no one but himself to blame , ’’ Mohammed said.

The minister said he was very proud to lead the ‘ O To Ge’ movement that is set to finally bring down the Berlin Wall of political hegemony in Kwara State and send Okupe ’ s boss into political oblivion.

He said the movement will also free Okupe himself from merely being his master’ s voice , so he can fully devote his time to his new – found pastime – fiction writing .
