PRESIDENT BUHARI RALLIES LCBC HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENTS AGAINST TERRORISTS

It was a renewed call to arms in N’djamena, capital of the Republic of Chad, on Thursday, as President Muhammadu Buhari held a one-day consultation with Heads of State and Governments of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC).
The meeting was called to address the recent upsurge in terrorist activities in the region, and the Nigerian President rallied his colleagues from Chad, Niger Republic, and Republic of Cameroon to a fresh onslaught against insurgents, particularly the Boko Haram group.

“Times as these call for quick interventions and measures,” President Buhari stated, adding:

“As you are aware and have witnessed in recent times, there are new developments of security concern in our sub-region. The region in the recent past has witnessed increasing attacks, particularly on military formations by elements of the Boko Haram terrorists as well as the renewed kidnapping of people. These activities are aimed at weakening our collective resolve to eradicate them from the region.

“We must not cave in. The group’s renewed strategy of increasingly mining the general area as well as its recent deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance activities have proved to be critical factors in the resurgence of attacks in the region.”

Commending what he called the “untiring efforts” of the leadership of the LCBC, and officers and men of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), President Buhari noted that the efforts of those who strive to bring peace and stability to the region would never be forgotten.

“We are committed to ensuring that the ideals of restoring peace, stability and viability of the Lake Chad Region to its glorious state, for which some of you have paid the ultimate price is attained,” he vowed.

President Buhari submitted: “We must not relent and allow the enemies of the region to succeed in their quest to destabilize the area. We must reinvigorate our collective will and commitment towards eradicating terrorism from our region. We must remain focused and true to ensuring sustainable development. To this end, I have requested that bilateral and multilateral platforms of engagements by member countries affected by the conflict be revamped to ensure collective actions towards stamping out the remnants of the terrorists from the region.

“There is no gainsaying that also fueling the crisis are the twin menaces of poverty and the continued shrinkage of the Lake Chad, which have rendered the people of the region vulnerable to terrorist activities. Attention is drawn to the Lake and its resources, which have always been the source of livelihood for the millions of people that live within and around the basin.”

He charged the Presidents and Heads of Governments in attendance to make concerted efforts to ensure the actualization of efforts to recharge the Lake, through Inter-Basin Water Transfer, from the Congo Basin.

President Buhari stressed that if meticulously pursued, the project “has the capacity to unlock the economic potentials and provide solutions to the myriad of interrelated challenges confronting the region.”

As Chairman of the Summit of Heads of State and Governments of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, President Buhari assured of his commitment to providing the required leadership and direction for the actualization of peace and security in the area.

He reiterated an earlier promise he had made to troops fighting terrorism: “We are committed to ensuring you have the requisite and enabling equipment to optimally function. Your welfare is, and would continue to remain our priority. Together, we shall restore the Lake Chad Region to its glorious days.”

In attendance at the consultation, apart from the Nigerian President, were, President Idris Deby Itno of Chad, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic, and Prime Minister of Cameroon, Philemon Yang, who represented President Paul Biya.

In a joint communique, the Heads of State and Governments, resolved to change modus operandi, collaborate more, and renew assault on all forms of terrorism and criminal acts, till wholesome peace was restored to the region.

Insurgency: Buhari, Deby, 4 Leaders Meet In Chad Today

A high level meeting of six African leaders including President Muhammadu Buhari and Idriss Deby is expected to hold in N’Djamena, the Chadian Capital today over the resurgence of Boko Haram Insurgency

According to the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina the meeting was convened by President Buhari in his capacity as Chairman of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission.

He said the one-day meeting will review the security situation in the areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency and adopt measures to enhance the capacity of the Multinational Joint Task Force to meet the challenges of securing the areas.

The presidents of the Commission’s member countries of Chad, Cameroon, Niger and the Central African Republics have been invited to attend the meeting. The President of Benin Republic, a troops-contributing country, has also been invited.

PDP Vs APC: Why I’m Supporting Buhari – Obasanjo’s Son

Olujonwo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained why he is supporting President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term in office.

Olujonwo said his decision to support the President has not created any rift between him and his father, saying in supporting the President, he was only looking at the future of Nigerian youths.

The younger Obasanjo, who spoke at a media interactive session organised by the APC Press Corps, said despite supporting different Presidential candidates, the Obasanjo family remained one united and loving family.

He said: “When we get to certain point in our lives, you are responsible for the decisions you take. With all due respect, my father is my father and will remain my father despite our political differences. At the end of the day, this election will end. Does that stop him being my father? Are you saying we cannot sit down and have dinner together and discuss issues?

“As a nation, we need to progress mentally and quit looking at politics as a do or die or as something that separates us. Politics is meant to unite us. We can disagree to agree; we can have genuine argument. You see things from my point of view, I see things from your point of view and we see how we can work together.

“That is the type of politics we are trying to promote and the message we are trying to send across. We are looking to promote certain values in politics. That is why we are in politics. It is very important that we rise above religion, ethnicity and primordial sentiments for the interest of this nation as a whole.

“Politics is not a battle, it is not war. We should stop looking at it from the stand point of who is superior. I have an ideology and an opinion, my father has his and we are not in conflict, we are still a family, a loving family with my dad.”

On whether his father has tried to influence his decision since announcing his decision to support President Buhari, he said: “I am as an individual and as an adult. I am here as someone who believe in this Government. This Government is diversifying the economy from an oil based economy and has made agriculture fashionable.

“Today, people talk about farming and no longer look at it in a degrading manner. People now look at the value chain when you talk about farming. For me, it is all about the impact that this government has made. As a nation, we must look beyond oil and think outside the box by looking at other areas which is what this Government has come to do.

“Nigeria is a nation blessed in several ways and not just oil and this government is promoting youth involvement in all sectors. As a young man, I am looking at future and I believe in this Government and I am supporting Mr. President. So, I cannot speak for my father.

“Everybody’s parent wanted them to be one thing or the other, probably different from what they are today. But at certain stage in our lives, we choose our part. That does not amount to disrespecting your parents.”

On why he is supporting the President, he said “We believe that by promoting the ideology of Mr. President, we are also promoting his achievement. We will be putting the fact forward and allow the electorates decide what is best for them.

“A lot has been going on in the social media. But at the end of the day, it is the grass root that matters. One of the things the President faced when he came into office was the security challenges in this country. Several local governments were under Boko Haram.

“We will always have security challenges, but it is important that we have a leader who is sincere, trustworthy and make sure that our resources are applied towards fighting for this nation. You can see that from the successes we have recorded, Me President has done a tremendous Job within a short time.”

2019 ELECTIONS: FCT MINISTER CALLS FOR STUDENTS’ SUPPORT FOR BUHARI

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has called on Nigerian students to give their full support to President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming elections, to ensure that the planned emergency in the education sector succeeds.

The FCT Minister, who made the call when he received the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), FCT Chapter, on an advocacy visit to his office on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, said the Buhari-led administration has already laid a solid foundation that will take education out of the woods. He said the impending emergency declaration in the sector will give further impetus to the gains already made.

Malam Bello noted that it was imperative for students to give their support to government to ensure that the agenda is not derailed, adding that students were part of the main group that would benefit when these programmes and policies are eventually realized.

According to the Minister, “We will continue to count on your support because at the end of the day, what the President is doing is building a foundation for a better tomorrow and those that will benefit in this greater tomorrow are basically yourselves and your membership.

“Building a foundation is the most difficult of any construction work you are doing because you will spend time and resources and at the end of the day, you don’t see much, especially if it is a massive building and by all standards, Nigeria is a massive country in terms of size and population. That’s why it takes a lot of time for people to see the foundation to come out. But now the foundation is coming out and people have started to see.

“So, we need the primary support of all of you who are the primary stakeholders so that we can build something that as time goes by, all of us will be proud to be associated with,” Bello said.

The Minister, who is billed to address the students during their forthcoming rally expressed his admiration and respect for student union leaders, noting that they personify the passion and support of the Nigerian student. He praised their ability to combine unionism with rigorous academic activities.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Association, Comrade Mojeed Kola Omolaja (M.K.O), commended the FCT Minister for the giant strides recorded in the FCT education sector, especially the infrastructural achievements at the Federal University of Science and Technology, Abaji.

Comrade Omolaja, who announced that members of the association would be embarking on a 5-day rally in the FCT, pledged their willingness to collaborate with the FCT Administration in order to promote the interest and welfare of students.

He however appealed to the Minister to intensify efforts at beefing up security in the campuses and consider the possibility of empowering a students’-based security outfit to checkmate crime and criminality around the campuses.

Highlight of the meeting was the conferment of the award of ‘Grand Patron of Nigerian Students in the FCT’ on the FCT Minister by the association, in recognition of the positive roles the Minister has played in transforming the education sector in the Territory. The NANS Chairman explained that the award was a collective gesture by all the students’ union presidents of the campuses in the FCT, including the University of Abuja, School of Nursing, and the College of Education.

PRESIDENT BUHARI ORDERS MILITARY TO END BOKO HARAM THREAT

President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday in Maiduguri, Borno State, ordered the military to eliminate all threats of Boko Haram, declaring that that the war against terrorism is “a must win’’.

“It is a must win war. I want to encourage our troops not to be distracted by speculations but remain focused and committed to the task of eliminating Boko Haram from the surface of the earth,’’ the President said while declaring open the 2018 Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference.

President Buhari assured the military that his administration will continue to address their needs in terms of manpower development and equipment supply, promising that their welfare and entitlements will also be improved.

“I want to reassure you that as your Commander-In-Chief, I will do everything within my power to continue empowering you by providing all the necessary equipment, force multipliers and enablers required for you to prevail on the field.

“I also want you to be aware that I am currently looking into measures to improve your entitlements and welfare generally,’’ he added.

The President commended the efforts and sacrifices of the military in safeguarding the peace, security and territorial integrity of the country.

According to him, “the officers and men who are fighting against the curse of terrorism in the North East deserve all the attention our country’s leadership can give them.

“As President of the country, I am determined to ensure that every citizen feels safe and secure in all parts of the country. To achieve this, the security agencies must rise to the challenge and curb threats to security in our country.’’

President Buhari called on the armed forces to embrace “the wind of change that is blowing across the country,” urging more cooperation at inter-service and inter-agency levels.

“To this end, the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs must work closely together as well as with other security agencies to improve on strategies that will defeat terrorism, militancy and other forms of criminal activities in our country,” he said.

President Buhari, who also addressed officers and men of the Nigerian Army at the Maimalari Barrack, headquarters of Operation Lafiya-Dole, said he shared in the agony of loss of gallant soldiers.

“I have come to pay homage to the gallant soldiers lost by the nation and to console the injured ones in recent terrorist attacks. I urge you to remain focused and win the war,’’ the President said.

President Buhari also commended Nigerian Army’s commitment to upholding democracy and urged them to remain committed to their profession.

“As we approach the 2019 General Elections, I want to urge all members of the Armed Forces to live up to their responsibilities and remain non-partisan. In addition, you must all remain vigilant throughout the electioneering period and alongside other security agencies, prevent every form of violence that could disrupt the process in line with your Rules of Engagement,’’ he said.

President Buhari urged the soldiers, who were on parade, to always show disciplined conduct.

“No matter how equipped the military is, the military is of no use if it doesn’t have discipline,” he said, urging them to uphold the tenets of the constitution and ensure tight security to protect lives and property.’’

In his statement at the conference, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai said internal security had greatly improved from what it was in 2015 when President Buhari assumed office.

Lt. Gen. Buratai said a new proactive strategy would be put in place to counter the recent military losses.

He said the army remains neutral and non-partisan and will carry out their constitutional duty of safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

The Minister of Defence, Brig. Gen.  Mansur Dan Ali (rtd) assured the President that the military was putting in place new strategies to stabilize the country.

President Buhari asked for a minute’s silence in memory of the gallant soldiers and before his departure, he went round the wards to visit wounded soldiers in the hospital within the army barracks.

He gave assurances that the soldiers would be taken care of.

At the Palace of Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, President Buhari said his administration will do everything to secure the country, commiserating with all Nigerians who lost loved ones  following recent setbacks in the fight against terrorists.

“We have to remind ourselves where we were and where we are now and what happened in between. The people of Borno State know what we did in the last three years. The situation would have been worse,” he said.

President Buhari also expressed his determination to change the unemployment situation of youths in the country, pointing out that “Jobs for the young persons, especially those who are 30 and below in Borno State and across the federation continue to engage our attention. We go to bed with it and wake up with it.”

In his remarks, the Shehu of Borno, who spoke on behalf of the State’s Council of Chiefs, thanked the President for bringing peace to the state, and asked for intensive security patrols across the territories to save people from attacks on farms.

Foreign Direct Investment: Nigeria is investors deligt By Ayobami Akanji & Aliyu Abdullahi

The banks lobbied Washington so they could write the rules that got us into this crisis. They then lobbied Washington to get the money to bail them out. And then they are lobbying Washington to write the rules so they can get us into the next crisis. It’s perfect circularity – Elizabeth Warren

Elections world over generates different degrees of attention. Local or international, interested parties most times pitch with the side their emotions or interests appeal to. Then, different ideological postulations fly around in the political space.

Nigeria, despite all she has been through, is still the gateway to Africa. This is why everything that affects Nigeria, ends up affecting Africa. Our elections is always a drawer for international observers. It is therefore unsurprising to read from Ms Priti Patel, the UK’s former Secretary of State for International Development that Nigeria is a place investors should avoid and in violation of international laws.

She had her opinion carved on the stones of alleged refusal of the administration of President Buhari, in an Op-Ed in City AM, a London Paper, owned by Russians to honour an agreement involving a British Virgin Island (BVI)  firm Process & Industrial Development Limited (P&ID) and the Federal Government.
BVI’s are known to be tax havens in facilitating illicit flows of money globally a scourge the current administration is fighting and advocating against on the international fora – it is estimated that $80 billion flows out of Africa annually and 40% of these funds are  from Nigeria.  BVI’s commitment to zero tax and levels of secrecy encourages financial crimes and allows corporations and individuals to evade tax. It is estimated that $1.5 trillion worth of assets move through the BVI.

Background
In January 2010, P&ID and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources entered into a 20-year Gas Supply and Processing Agreement (GSPA). Under this agreement Nigeria was to supply Wet Gas to P&ID, who would process it in a newly-built facility and return it in the form of Lean Gas. P&ID could then sell the by-products of the refinement process for their own profit. Nigeria could not meet her contractual obligations in supplying Wet Gas as a result of militancy in the region.

However, P&ID treated this failure as a repudiation of the GSPA and claimed to have spent $40 million in the project, although it had not yet acquired the land or built the facilities, this warrants the poser, what claim is P&ID laying compensation to? Hence the tribunal awarded damages to P&ID in the sum of $6.6 billion and the then government was able to settle out of court and an agreement to pay $850 million.

Conversely, the Solicitor General explaining the legality of this case which resulted in a default decision for the enforcement of the payment of $6.59 billion against Nigeria. He noted that the “ default entry was not a judgement, adding that the court lacks constitutional powers to institute such an order against a sovereign state like Nigeria’

Furthermore,  government is a continuity, it is poignant to note that the agreement Ms Patel was harping on was entered by the last administration, and in a suspicious manner the payment was pushed to the incoming Buhari administration, whereas the agreement of payment was reached on August 11, 2014 by the former Attorney General.  In a swift reaction to the oped, Presidential media aide, Shehu Garba said that the FG has submitted to the jurisdiction of a court in the US to determine issues in the dispute. This is a clear indication that the government, despite it being constrained by funds and other electoral obligations, still wants to respect the rule of law, but would tread the path of due process.

In the same vein, Ms Patel asserted  that corruption hasn’t been mitigated in Nigeria is really laughable, and clearly shows that she is on a hack job. It is very easy to talk about how ugly a picture is when you intentionally look at it from the side of sun-rays. Nigerians at home and abroad who analyse happenings objectively will be best placed to answer this. Gone are the days when the vaults of the Central Bank was reduced to something within the wirepull of a hedonist who as much the itch to flash cash comes, however unreasonable or irresponsible or directionless the itch is, will with immediate alacrity and irrational jingoism, summon siren blaring bullion vans to come for extract. Gone are days when funds meant for the upgrade of military hardware was turned to a bazaar, reducing the army’s efforts in combating Boko Haram insurgency a sisyphean. Gone are days when government offices were clearinghouses for deals that was planned for millions but shared by tens.

President Buhari has signed several Executive Orders to demonstrate his resolve to holistically eradicate corruption of Nigeria. Nigeria joined the Open Government Partnership (OGP) a global body committed to accountability and transparency in the management of public office.

It is worthy to note that corruption and being unethical isn’t something that can be completely eradicated. Ms Patel is a proof of this as she recently resigned because she held 12 secret meetings with Israel senior government officials and US diplomats without informing the Foreign Office, thereby going against the convention of the Foreign Office to disclose business overseas. She even went as far as saying that former Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson was aware of her trip but later changed the bearings of her assertions. We recall her visit to Nigeria on September 1 2017, alongside Britain’s former Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson they met with the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo promising to assist Nigeria in the wars against insurgency and corruption, Johnson described Nigeria as an incredible country and power house of the African economy while Ms Patel noted “We stand shoulder with the government and the strength of the UK relationship with Nigeria on all aspects including the diversification and development going on in the country”

This is very unethical but Ms Patel is still a member of parliament of Witham in Essex since 2010. Nobody has asked her to leave this post or to follow her line of thoughts, no one has asked the world not to deal with her. It defies logic and defines illogic that she will run to town with an assertion that investors should consider how risky an environment Nigeria is before investing.  Same country that had Investments to the tune of $1.3bn in 2017 from only the US.

Few months ago, Prime Minister May came visiting to Nigeria looking at how both countries can expand their trade balances. Nigeria is the second largest trading partner of Britain in Africa, with a trade balance of 4.5 billion pounds annually. MOUs were signed on economic development forum to allow both countries broaden and deepen bilateral trade.

Nonetheless, In demonstration of this administration’s commitment to better the lot of investors, to secure their investments, and being the largest economy in Africa and among the top ten performing economies in the world the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) was setup in July 2016. It has amongst other things improved Nigeria’s standing in the global ease of doing business index, Nigeria moved from 37 points to 56 – 24 places move upward.

It is expected that people like Ms Patel who are thought to be at a privileged positions where relevant information is as close as the click of a finger to be objective. It is sad that facts are now twisted to the points where they bear semblance with anything far away from common sense. Nigeria is an investor’s delight and unlike Ms Patel, the Federal Government Of Nigeria is calling on all interested investors to troop into the country for business. Their businesses will be protected if they follow laid down rules; that fact they shouldn’t worry about. What Ms Patel and her ilk has and will say isn’t important.

The President will use his visit to declare open the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) conference which begins today.

He is also expected to meet the troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole at the theatre command fighting insurgency in the north-east region to boost their morale.

The  Planned visit by Commander -in-Chief comes about two weeks after the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a Boko Haram splinter group, killed dozens of soldiers in Metele, a remote village near the border with the Niger Republic.

The conference which was earlier scheduled to hold in Benin City the Edo State capital was shifted to Borno purportedly over the Metele massacre

He has held two different meetings with intelligence service chiefs at the Villa twice this week following the recent security situation in the country.

STOP DANCING ON OUR HEROES’ GRAVES – BMO TO ATIKU

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has carpeted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar for their scant regard for human lives, and for playing politics with the death of Nigerian soldiers in battle.

It said in a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke that since the unfortunate attack on Metele village in the North east a few days ago, the opposition party and its candidate had been using every opportunity to celebrate the situation.

BMO said “We are at a loss as to why opposition elements have been milking the tragic deaths of national heroes so much so that the international media took notice with different castigating headlines which should have made these people retrace their steps.

“In a bid to discredit the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, PDP posted gory pictures of dead soldiers from elsewhere and few days later, Atiku offered scholarships to the children of slain soldiers.

“The former Vice President’s move came at a time the military authorities had not even completed the standard practice of identifying soldiers killed in action or even notifying their next of kin”.

It noted that the inhumane act amounted to dancing on the graves of those who paid the supreme sacrifice to ensure that the PDP Presidential candidate could conveniently invite his friends to celebrate his American University of Nigeria Founder’s Day last weekend.

“He and his media handlers have forgotten how in 2014, he lamented at a press conference that a handful of Boko Haram fighters had successfully invaded and hoisted the caliphate flag in Mubi, a town with a population of about 300,000 as well as Michika and Gulak after they had over-ran Bama a town nearly 400 kilometres from Yola.

“This gave rise to thousands of displaced persons in Adamawa, and not once did the former Vice President announce relief support for IDPs or scholarships for children of soldiers that died liberating his state.

“The height of Atiku and his party’s insensitivity is the fact that they are still busy issuing statements critical of the military leadership twenty four hours after Air Force jets crossed into a neighbouring country to launch airstrikes on the base of the terrorists who carried out the Metele attack, based on actionable intelligence.

“They didn’t even acknowledge that over 200 foreign terrorists were killed and some of their armoured vehicles destroyed in the air raids”.

BMO noted that Nigerians would not forget in a hurry how PDP allowed the insurgency to fester for years during which no fewer than 16 local government areas in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states were fully controlled by the insurgents.

“We make bold to say that if the $2billion set aside for arms purchase in 2015 were not shared to PDP members through the office of the National Security Adviser, no one would be talking about the capacity of Boko Haram or ISWAP in 2018”,it added.

Metele Attack: PDP, Atiku Dancing on the Graves of Our Valiant, Patriotic Soldiers

The allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that military funds have been diverted to finance the  2019 election campaigns of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a sad reminder of the evil and retrogressive practices the PDP was notorious for during its defunct rule.

God forbid that the APC inherits and apply such morbid practice as brazenly displayed during the immediate-past PDP administration where funds allocated to fight the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast were shared among PDP leaders and their cronies.

It is clear that the PDP and its Presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar have decided to dance on the graves of our valiant and patriotic soldiers by politicising their deaths in the recent Boko Haram attack on the Nigerian Army Metele base.

The PDP and Atiku are playing desperate politics where even the blood of our fallen heroes is fair game. Their actions are callous and insensitive to the families and dependants of the late soldiers and indeed our military which battles daily to ensure our territorial integrity.

Nigerians see through PDP’s ploy to score political points as elections approach and it will surely backfire.

While the APC mourns the death of our military and other security personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty, we urge them to remain focussed on the brave task of securing the nation. The President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration remains solidly committed to bringing lasting peace and security to all parts of the country and ensuring that previously displaced persons are rehabilitated to resume their normal and productive lives.
