Causer Announces Grants for Trail Development in Potter County

HARRISBURG – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) today announced more than $300,000 in state grant funding for ATV and snowmobile trail development in the Susquehannock State Forest in Potter County.
 
“I’m very pleased to see the Commonwealth investing in these trails, providing both local residents and visitors to the area with more opportunities to enjoy all our region has to offer,” Causer said.
 
A grant of $262,629 will be used for the development of the Indian Run ATV Connector Trail in West Branch Township. Work will include rehabilitation of approximately 3.2 miles of trail from the Susquehannock ATV Trail to the intersection of West Branch Road and Notch Road; construction of two bridges; and ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
 
A grant of $44,080 will be used for the development of the Losey Run Snowmobile Trail in Ulysses Township. Work will include construction of a bridge over Losey Run near Rock Run Road, as well as ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
 
In addition to the local grants, $242,266 will be used by Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Forestry to groom approximately 2,500 miles of snowmobile trails within DCNR state forests.
 
The funding was part of $11.2 million in grants awarded through the Community Conservation Partnership Program.

Obituary: John L. Freeman, 61, Cuba

Cuba, NY — John L. Freeman, 61, of 9340 Horner Rd. passed away unexpectedly Friday (November 8, 2019).

Born April 25, 1958 in Cuba, he was the son of Dr. Max E. and Rita (Kaufmann) Freeman, I.  On May 10, 1980 in Allegany he married Deborah S. Elling, who survives.
John was a 1976 graduate of Cuba Central School and began employment at Paul Brown Motors. At an early age he exhibited an interest in understanding how machines worked and was a self-taught mechanic and jack-of-all trades.  In 1983 he established Freeman’s Auto Service in Cuba.  He was counted on by his many family, friends, and the community to fix their cars or any machine that required his talented touch.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, a former councilman for the town of Cuba, and a former member of the Cuba Lions Club. John was a water sports enthusiast and certified Master Diver in addition to being a member of the Power Squadrons.  He was an avid camper, motorcyclist, snowmobiler, and former member of the Cuba Driftbusters.
John was extremely proud of his family and enjoyed hosting large get-togethers.  He had an amazing sense of humor with an effective sarcastic tone at times and enjoyed gathering with his friends during the week at various coffee-meeting locations.
Surviving in addition to his wife are 4 children Justin L. (Meghan Perschke) Freeman of Rochester, Kristie L. (Kevin) Flower of Pittsville, MD, Andrew J. (Cara) Freeman of Cuba and Adam M. Freeman of Lakewood; 4 grandchildren Aaden, Jack, Jillian and Colton; 2 brothers Max E. (Brenda Ferrier) Freeman, II of Prescott, AZ and Stewart A. (Karla Frost) of Cuba; 2 sisters Melissa (John) Raes of Phelps and Becky (Dennis Sawaya) Malzahn of Englewood, FL and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. Olean.  Funeral services will be held Friday (November 15, 2019) at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.  Rev. Obituary: LaVerne W. “Bones” Chadderdon, 85, Bolivar

Bolivar – LaVerne W. “Bones” Chadderdon, 85, of 116 2nd St. passed away on Monday November 11, 2019 in the Highland Health Care Center Wellsville following a brief illness. Born on May 27, 1934 in Cuba, he was the son of Vernon and Maybel Hurd Chadderdon. He married the former Frances Hungerford on June 19, 2005 in Bolivar, Mrs. Chadderdon survives. Bones was a graduate of the Bolivar Central School class of 1953. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from SUNY Brockport in 1971. Bones was employed in the Communication Dept. of RG&E in Rochester. Later Bones was employed by the Angelica, Warsaw, Caledonia-Mumford and Pavilion School Dist. as a teacher prior to his retirement. Bones was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1954-1956. He was inducted into the Allegany County Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 and was a member of Kenyon Andrus Post 772 American Legion Bolivar.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Kathy (Pat) Tucci Avondale PA; four sons, Kelly Howry of Clinton IL, Craig (Cinzia) Chadderdon of Scottsville NY, Greig (Linda) Chadderdon of Caledonia, NY, Kyle M. Chadderdon of Caledonia NY; Eight grandchildren and three great-grandsons. Preceded in death by a grandson and a sister Laura Miller. Friends may call at the Schaffner Funeral Home Inc. Bolivar on Friday from 10-11 a.m. Funeral services will follow visitation at 11 a.m. Pastor Kevin Palmitier of the Followers of the Way Church Friendship will officiate. Obituary: Jeffrey L. Stephens, 69, Alfred Station

Alfred Station – Jeffrey L. Stephens, 69, of 4868 State Route 21, passed away peacefully on Friday (November 8, 2019) at Highland Hospital in Rochester.
Born in Long Island, NY, June 12, 1950, the son of Conner L. and Lyla (Mullen) Stephens, he was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Andover Central School. He had attended Fredonia State College, and later graduated from Alfred University. Jeff was retired from ACES at Alfred State College, where he had been the vendor manager. He was a member of the Almond Union of Churches, where he participated in the choir, and several committees, and he also sang with the Barbershop singers. Jeff loved the New York Yankees, and the Buffalo Bills, and collecting many different guns.
He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Diane L. Stephens, and a brother Timothy H. Stephens.
He is survived by his wife Lois Croston Stephens whom he married August 24, 1979, his daughter Sheri Stephens of Alfred Station, his 2 sisters Susan (Steven) Stephens Spangler of Myakka City, FL, Nancy (Rob) Stephens McCabe of Scottsville, NY, brothers in law Richard (Patricia) Croston of Andover, Gene Croston of Wichita Falls, TX, several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
The family will be present 12-1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2019, at the Almond Union Of Churches, where a Memorial Service will take place at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Michelle Ormsby-Serra, and Pastor Charles Emerson officiating.

Obituary: Andrea Mary Schoenthal, 76, Wellsville

WELLSVILLE – Andrea Mary Schoenthal, 76, of 4192 A Bolivar Road passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2019 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born October 18, 1943 in Buffalo, the daughter of the late John J. and Audrey (Fabian) Lozinsky. On September 3, 1966 in Buffalo she married Bruce R. Schoenthal who predeceased her on January 20, 2018.
Andrea was a graduate of Riverside High School in Buffalo, and received a B.S. from the University of Buffalo in Lab Technology. She is the founder of Creative Writers of the Southern Tier, a writers support group that lasted over 40 years. She was a published author of many fiction and non- fiction articles and short stories.
 She was a long-time member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, a former member of the Wellsville Central School PTA, and the AAUW.
She is survived by a son, Philip A. Schoenthal, a daughter, Dawn M. Schoenthal, and a son-in-law, Steven B. Foehner, all of Poca, WV, and a sister, Johna Lozinsky of Buffalo. She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband, by her sister, Rebecca “Becky” Tulipane.

NEWS: Houghton College Presents Lyric Theatre Production

Houghton, N.Y.—This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (Nov. 14–16), Houghton College’s Lyric Theatre will present their fall 2019 production, An Evening of Three Pieces. The show features a trio of lively musical theatre selections: Gary Belshaw’s The Worst One Ever, Douglas Moore’s Gallantry, and Adam Gwon’s Ordinary Days. Amanda Cox, professor of voice at Houghton College, is directing the production.
The Worst One Ever is a 10-minute comic operetta set in a college dorm room. According to Cox, the story features three college students lamenting their respective “worst ones”—a father, a boyfriend, and a professor. “They support and encourage one another through the highs and lows,” says Cox, “and eventually receive new information that may very well change their tune!”
Gallantry is a comedic one-act which takes place within the world of a campy, sensational medical drama. Cox offers a tantalizing summary: “Dr. Gregg is after Nurse Lola, but she is already engaged! But wait, her fiancé is at risk! Whom can we trust? There are scalpels! And there are even advertisements in between scenes for soap and floor wax.” The resulting romp is a hilarious combination of opera and soap opera.
The final piece, Ordinary Days, is a contemporary musical set in New York City. The story blends together pathos and comedy, as it follows the relationships of the four key characters. Houghton sophomore Collin Zehr plays the tenor part of Warren, an optimistic young man who spends his days handing out motivational flyers on the streets of New York, despite being continually rebuffed by the people he encounters. “All [Warren] wants is to spread a little joy into the world,” says Zehr, adding that Ordinary Days “is a beautiful and simple story that will leave you wanting to value all the ordinary things in life a little bit more.”
Tickets for An Evening of Three Pieces can be purchased online at houghton.edu, or at the door. They can also be purchased at the Houghton College Campus Center during lunch and dinner hours. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, and $5 for college students and children under eighteen. Shows are scheduled for Thursday and Friday at 7pm, with additional shows at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday. All performances will take place in the Center for the Arts Recital Hall on Houghton’s campus.
An Evening of Three Pieces is Cox’s sixth show as the director of Lyric Theatre. “I absolutely cannot wait to share our show with an audience this semester,” she says. “I know that our audiences will laugh, cry, and be moved and changed by what we have to share. Please come out and join us!”
