Across The Region: Troopers respond to accident at Oneonta residence

On Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at approximately 11:35 a.m., New York State Police at Oneonta responded to a report of a male who fell approximately 20-30 feet from a ladder at a residence on Swart Hollow Road in the town of Oneonta.  
Troy G. Anderson, age 56 of Oneonta was assisting the home owner with outside repairs when for an unknown reason fell off a ladder.  The homeowner called 911.  AMR ambulance and Oneonta Fire and Rescue began administering life saving measures prior to the arrival of troopers.  Anderson was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  
The investigation is on-going, but at this time no foul play was observed and it appears to be an accident.

Ufot Ekaette, former SGF, is dead, Buhari mourns

The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SSG), Ufot Ekaette, is dead. Mr Ekaette, 80, from Akwa Ibom State, was once a deputy governor of the state in the era of military rule in Nigeria.

He was appointed SGF in May 1999 by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He served Mr Obasanjo’s administration in that position for eight years and was later appointed the first minister of the Niger Delta Affairs ministry by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

It is unclear for now when Mr Ekaette passed on. A statement from President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday morning expressed shock over Mr Ekaette’s death.

The statement signed by the president’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said the former SGF was “a gentleman who had given his best in the service of his country”.

The president condoled with the late Ekaette’s family, the government, and people of Akwa Ibom State, and prayed for God to comfort them.

Trump Intel chief to be grilled over whistleblower

US lawmakers are preparing to question President Trump’s top intelligence official over a whistleblower complaint that sparked an impeachment inquiry.

Acting national intelligence director Joseph Maguire initially refused to share the complaint with Congress.

It refers to a controversial phone call between Mr Trump and the Ukrainian president, US media report.

In the call, Mr Trump pushes Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate corruption claims involving the son of Joe Biden.

Mr Biden – the leading Democratic presidential hopeful – says a rough transcript of the conversation released on Wednesday shows the president betrayed his oath of office.

Democrats opened an impeachment inquiry against the president on Tuesday, accusing Mr Trump of seeking foreign help in the hope of smearing Mr Biden and of using military aid to Ukraine as a potential bargaining tool.

President Trump has dismissed the impeachment proceedings as a “hoax” and a “witch-hunt”.
The whistleblower’s formal complaint was still classified on Wednesday, but some US politicians had been allowed to see it, and senior Democrats called for its immediate release.

Ex- French president, Jacques Chirac dies at 86

Jacques Chirac, the former French president whose later years were blighted by corruption scandals, has died aged 86.

“President Jacques Chirac died this morning surrounded by his family, peacefully,” his son-in-law told AFP.

Mr Chirac served two terms as French president and took his country into the single European currency.

The French National Assembly has observed a minute’s silence in homage to him.

IMF names Kristalina Georgieva as new head

Bulgarian economist Kristalina Georgieva has been selected as the new managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

Ms Georgieva, who was previously chief executive of the World Bank, becomes the first person from an emerging economy to lead the IMF.

She will succeed Christine Lagarde, who is leaving to become head of the European Central Bank (ECB). Ms Georgieva was the only nominee for the job.

Mad Melon of Danfo Drivers is dead

One half of the popular 90s group ‘Danfo Drivers’, Omeofa Oghene, popularly known as Mad Melon is dead. There are reports that he died after a battle with an undisclosed illness. His demise was announced by veteran singer, Daddy Showkey. In a video shared on his page, a visibly shocked Daddy Showkey couldn’t hide his sadness about the news.

“What kind of sad news is this, what kind of sad news is this, what kind of sad news is this. Oh my God, we just lost somebody, I just heard it just now. I’m not happy at all, I’m not happy. When dem go dey tell people make dem dey hear, make dem dey hear,” he said

Two overnight fires cause extensive damage in Steuben County

Fire ripped through a house trailer in East Campbell. Crews were dispatched at 11:38 p.m. Wednesday after dispatch received numerous reports that the trailer was engulfed. Initial reports indicated the trailer was not occupied when the flames were discovered. It was a two-alarm blaze sending equipment in from East Campbell, Campbell, Coopers, Corning, Painted Post, Gang Mills and North and South Corning. The fire was declared under control within 45 minutes. The cause is under investigation.

A Town of Caton home was badly damaged by an overnight fire. The fire began shortly before midnight Wednesday at a home on Handy Hollow Road. Online photos showed flames were through the roof. Eight fire departments from two states were called in including Caton, Lindley, South Corning, Pine City, Lawrenceville, Millerton, Painted Post and Webb Mills. The cause of that blaze is also under investigation.

Davido’s brother, Adewale set for traditional wedding

Davido’s brother, Adewale Adeleke is set to wed traditionally in a matter of days. Recall he proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Kani in July 2019.

Kani made the news of their marriage known on her instagram page this morning. The traditional marriage is expected to take place in Cross River state, Kani’s hometown.

Disclosing the big news, Kani wrote; ”Counting down days to #AdeKani”.

Court orders final forfeiture of hotel, houses belonging to Kwara civil servant

Justice Sikiru Oyinloye of Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has ordered the final forfeiture of a hotel and cars belonging to a Kwara civil servant to the federal government.

Also forfeited to the federal government are a three bedroom flat, two wings of two bedroom flats and a room and parlour self contain.

Giving his judgment on Tuesday, Justice Oyinloye said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, proved its case against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt, noting that the evidences presented before the court were strong and reliable.

“The interim order of this honourable court was published in The Nation Newspaper, while the court’s processes were served alongside with the hearing notice to the defendant, but despite this, the defendant did not show up to explain why the said properties should not be forfeited to the federal government,” Justice Oyinloye said.

He further observed that “The evidence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was not controverted or challenged by the defendant or any interested parties to the suit. This honourable court is of the opinion that the defendant was fully informed about the proceedings. In view of the forgoing, this honourable court hereby order that the said properties be forfeited to the federal government of Nigeria.”

Prosecuting counsel Nnemeka Omewa in moving the motion dated September 8, 2019 urged Mr Oyinloye to grant the prayers of the EFCC, which in part was for an order of the court for the forfeiting to the federal government an unregistered Toyota Camry 2008 model, “found, traced and recovered by the Commission from the respondent which property is reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activity.”

And an order of the court for the forfeiting to the federal government a gold-coloured Porsche Cayanne vehicle, “found traced and recovered by the Commission from the respondent which property is reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activity.”

Mr Oyinloye relying on the motion and13 exhibits attached equally ordered the cars recovered from the respondent, Abdul Ibrahim, to be forfeited to the federal government.

Husband, brother kill man for wooing house wife

A man, Mr. Pius Ukrakpo, was on Tuesday stabbed to death by the husband and brother-in-law of a married woman identified as Mama Ejime.

They alleged that the late Ukrakpo had purportedly made romantic approach to Mama Ejime.

A source had revealed that Ukrakpo met his death at hospital road in Jeddo community, Okpe local government area of Delta State when the said Mama Ejime invited him to her house without knowing his killer had laid ambush.

The source said Ukrakpo was shocked when he saw Mama Ejime’s husband and his brother coming out from their hiding.

They allegedly stabbed and poured pepper on him until they confirmed he was no longer breathing.

His assailants were said to have locked the house’s burglary proof, frustrating all attempt by the deceased to seek for help.

It was gathered that he died before neighbours could come to his rescue while Mama Ejime was said to have escaped.

Her husband and his brother were however handed over to the Orerokpe Police Division with the assistance of the Jeddo Community Vigilante.
