California police charge man with murder of off-duty security officer privateofficer.org

LOS ANGELES CA October 9 2019 A man arrested in the killing of a young mother outside her Granada Hills home back in July was dating her estranged wife, authorities said.
Javier Flores, 24, was taken into custody last month in the shooting death of 23-year-old Cheyenne Brown as she was arriving home from work.
On Monday, Flores was charged with one count of murder with a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, as well as an allegation of using a handgun, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office reports.
On the night of July 22, Flores shot and killed Brown next to her car in the 16600 block of Chatsworth Street, Los Angeles police said. She was returning from work and had parked feet away from the backyard door to a home she shared with her grandparents.
Her grandfather, Bill Schroeder, told CBS2 at the time that he heard three gunshots and ran outside to find his Brown lying in the alley behind their home.
On Sept. 12, Flores was taken into custody at his Simi Valley home during a series of raids on multiple locations in Granada Hills and Mission Hills.
Prosecutors Monday disclosed that Flores’ girlfriend was Brown’s estranged wife. No further details or a motive were disclosed.
Flores, who is set to be arraigned Monday, could face the death penalty if convicted as charged.
Flores left behind a two-year-old daughter. She was a security guard for a gated community and a competitive roller sports athlete. Just days prior to her murder, she had placed fifth in a figure skating competition at the 2019 USA Roller Sports National Championships in Spokane, Wash.

Memphis shootout at Wolfchase Galleria have customers scared and angry privateofficer.org

Image result for Wolfchase Galleria security, police presence again a focus after Sunday shooting in mall parking lot
MEMPHIS, Tenn. October 9 2019 On Sunday, a gun battle was reported at a popular Memphis mall and now police said that they have more information on the incident and are working with mall security to increase patrols on the property.
Police responded to the Wolfchase Galleria after an exchange of gunfire outside the mall terrified and angered shoppers.
No one was hurt, but police are still searching for five men believed to be responsible for opening fire in the parking lot between Macy’s and The Cheesecake Factory.
One witness said that she came to the mall Sunday afternoon to pick up an outfit for an upcoming wedding. But instead of a quick and carefree errand, chaos and gunfire broke out in the parking lot, forcing that woman to find cover inside a department store, as unease and uncertainty lingered in those dramatic moments.
“I didn’t sleep well last night,” the witness said.
According to Memphis police, after an argument, two groups fired at each other in the mall parking lot, using a handgun and an AR style pistol.
“They started the safety and security procedures and had us put in the dressing room and had us locked in the dressing room until it was safe,” the witness said.
Investigators believe five men in surveillance pictures are connected.
“It’s hurting all the businesses at the mall, it’s hurting everyone,” Diana Clark said.
The mall also has several SkyCop cameras throughout the property as well as private mall security.
This is the third major crime on mall property in a four-year span.
In December 2017, five were injured after brawls and gunshots broke out inside and outside Wolfchase Galleria.
In December 2016, Memphis police arrested nearly a dozen adults and teenagers, after flash mobs and fights erupted at Wolfchase and Oak Court Mall.
A spokesperson from Wolfchase Galleria issued this statement Monday evening:
“As the Memphis Police Department reported, this incident happened outside Wolfchase Galleria. We are committed to providing a safe and secure shopping environment for our shoppers, retailers and employees.
We have a number of proactive security measures in place, both seen and unseen, including maintaining a continuous security patrol of our property and parking lots. We also maintain a close working relationship with local law enforcement to maintain a safe environment at our property.”

Ohio University suspends all fraternities amid hazing allegations privateofficer.org

Columbus OH October 9 2019
Ohio University said Thursday it had suspended all of its fraternities following claims of widespread hazing.
The suspension is effective immediately and includes all five Interfraternity Council (IFC) chapters at the campus in Athens, about 70 miles southeast of Columbus.
“The swift action being taken in light of the allegations that have surfaced affirms Ohio University’s commitment to the health and safety of our students.,” the statement read.
Earlier this week, the school issued a cease and desist order to the ACACIA and Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternities after receiving allegations of hazing new members, The Post student newspaper reported.
Administrators received more allegations Wednesday against five other chapters, prompting the suspensions.
“These troubling allegations, which will be thoroughly investigated, indicate a potentially escalating systemic culture within our IFC organizations, and Ohio University will not put at risk the health and safety of our students,” Dean of Students Jenny Hall-Jones said in a letter.
All chapter meetings, events and activities are suspended until further notice. In May, Sigma Pi was expelled from the university for hazing, alcohol and drug use, and other student conduct code violations after the alleged hazing of 18-year-old Collin Wiant, who died in November.
A lawsuit by Wiant’s family alleges he died of asphyxiation after ingesting nitrous oxide provided to and forced on him by fraternity members. Sigma Pi denied those allegations and said Wiant wasn’t a pledge when he died. The fraternity said Wiant was removed from the pledging process weeks earlier because of a sexual-assault allegation.
The letter from Hall-Jones said each chapter is expected to develop and implement a plan to ensure its culture is aligned with that of the national organization and the school student code of conduct.
Failure to comply could result in disciplinary action, she said.
Judson Horras, President and CEO of the North American Interfraternity Conference told WJW-TV a suspension “that impacts students not accused of misconduct is not the right approach to address this critical issue. It disincentivizes students who are following the rules.”
He said the university should bring “bring all parties to the table to seek a path forward that places the highest priority on the health and safety of students, while respecting the rights of those that live up to the standards of fraternal excellence.”

Detroit MI October 9 2019 The Detroit police have finished their investigation into a shooting Sunday night at a grocery store where a security officer shot two people.
The incident happened at about 6 p.m. near the intersection of Joy and Greenfield roads on Detroit’s west side.
Police were called to the US Quality Supermarket on a report of two persons shot.
An argument started between a woman and the security guard. Witnesses said the woman told the security guard she was going to call her boyfriend.
“All I heard was them arguing at the grocery store,” a witness said.
Witnesses reported that the security guard was yelling, cursing and being disrespectful toward the woman inside the store.
Police said the woman’s boyfriend showed up and the three started arguing inside the store.
When the couple left the store, the security guard continued arguing and followed them outside.
According to authorities, the security guard shot the man as he was on a motorcycle.
Police said the woman pulled out her own weapon and was also shot by the security guard.
The man and woman were rushed to a hospital, where they are listed in serious condition.
Police said the security guard has a concealed pistol license and stayed at the scene to cooperate with the police investigation.
During their investigation, police have determined that the security guard escalated the confrontation inside the store and then followed the two victims outside where he eventually pulled his gun and shot an unarmed man that posed no threat to him.
The woman then pulled a firearm to defend herself after her male friend was shot, and the security guard shot her too, police said.
Police have charged the security guard with multiple felonies and could add additional charges in the coming days police said.

More than 5,000 hotels add security devices to protect workers from sexual harassment privateofficer.org

Motel 6 employees with panic buttons
Los Angeles CA October 9 2019
More than 5,000 U.S. hotels and resorts have begun offering employees security devices and training to help prevent sexual harassment — a problem that has gained prominence with the #MeToo movement and has been targeted by union leaders in Southern California.
A hotel trade group announced the progress Monday, saying an additional 15,000 properties will offer the devices and training by 2020. The news comes about a year after the top executives of Marriott, Hyatt, IHG, Wyndham and Hilton hotels held a joint news conference to promise they would address sexual harassment of hotel workers.
Since the promise was made last year, the American Hotel & Lodging Assn. said, 5,000 properties have offered their workers security devices, with the number of hotel companies committed to providing the devices and harassment training rising to 56 from 17.
Leaders of unions that represent hotel workers called the announcement a step in the right direction but they question whether the hotels will offer electronic panic buttons that workers can use to call for help in isolated areas of hotels or simply devices that emit loud noises, such as whistles.
“It’s a step in the right direction but it’s no guarantee to bring help unless it’s a real panic system,” said Kurt Petersen, a spokesman for Unite Here Local 11, which represents 30,000 workers employed in hotels, restaurants, airports, sports arenas and convention centers in Southern California and Arizona.
In the past few years, Unite Here helped lead initiative campaigns in Long Beach and Rancho Palos Verdes for ballot measures to require electronic panic buttons for hotel workers. Panic buttons are already required at hotels in Seattle, Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.
Long Beach voters overwhelmingly approved a measure in November to require panic buttons. Voters in Rancho Palos Verdes will vote Nov. 5 on a similar measure.
When representatives for Marriott, Hyatt and other major hotel brands made a commitment to address sexual harassment of workers last year, they said in a statement that each hotel company and property would be allowed to determine the most effective security device “with a range of options including devices with loud noise emitting features or emergency GPS tracking at the push of a handheld button.”
Rosanna Maietta, a spokeswoman for the American Hotel & Lodging Assn., said she knows of no hotel company that is simply handing out whistles to address sexual harassment.
“Every solution will differ per property based on the needs of the employees and the type of hotel, so a hotel on the side of a highway will have a different solution than a high-rise in Manhattan,” she said.
In the last 12 months, 39 hospitality companies, including hotel operators, investors and property managers, have joined Marriott, Hyatt and the other hotel giants in committing to providing safety devices and training to address the problem of sexual harassment.
The 39 companies range in size from Indiana-based Schahet Hotels, with 10 properties, to Interstate Hotels & Resorts, a Virginia-based group with 605 hotels and resorts.
The problem of sexual harassment of hotel workers gained prominence in Southern California after Sandra Pezqueda, a dishwasher working for a temporary staffing agency at the ritzy Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, filed a lawsuit claiming she was fired for complaining about sexual harassment by her supervisor. Pezqueda was among several women named “Persons of the Year” by Time magazine in 2017 for helping start the #MeToo movement.
Pezqueda settled the lawsuit against the temp agency for $250,000. Terranea was dismissed from the suit without paying her anything.
Terranea was among the 39 hospitality companies that joined Marriott, Hyatt and other hotels with a promise to provide safety devices and training.

TOPEKA, Kan. October 9 2019 Topeka High School is honoring alumni and staff who are doing great things after high school on Sunday.
Of those alumni, a public administrator, a Shakespearean scholar and a grandpa inspiring his granddaughter.
The Topeka High School Historical Society has done more than keeping the Trojan’s memory alive. For 38 years, they’ve honored distinguished alumi and staff, from senators to scientists, all the way to teachers, for the Topeka High School Hall of Fame. It’s not just anyone who is added.
“Somebody who’s taken their education, their experience at Topeka High, and taken it out into the world to make the world a better place,” Joy Dodd said with the Topeka High School Historical Society.
This year, two alumni students, two staff members and an honorary degree were given to lifelong Trojans.
David Overmyer, an artist, was given an honorary degree. David attended Topeka High School, but the school isn’t sure he formally graduated. David founded three pieces of art at Topeka High School, where they are now hanging around the school. David’s son received his father’s degree in David’s honor.
One of the alumni, the city manager of Dallas, T.C. Broadnax, had a chance to be home one more time.
“I’ve been to a lot of cities,” T.C. said, who graduated in 1987. “Worked in a lot of cities. But there is nothing like being back in Topeka. I’m enjoying it, and I’m feeling blessed and humbled to have been honored today.”
T.C. was on the Topeka High School 1986 state basketball championship team. After graduation, he went on to attend Washburn University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Communications. He then received his master’s in Public Administration from the University of North Texas Denton. T.C. is the second City Manager of Dallas to be inducted into the Topeka High School Hall of Fame. The first was George Schrader, class of 1949.
One of the other 2019-2020 inductees is a Shakespearean scholar, Gary Taylor, class of 1971, who said he wouldn’t be where he is today without his high school teachers.
“Everything I needed to know, I learned at Topeka High School,” Gary said. “I was a poor kid from North Topeka and Topeka High School opened the world to me.”
Gary is a professor at Florida State University. He went to high school and college wanting to study politics. Once he got to the University of Kansas, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, he learned politics weren’t for him. He instead studied English Classics.
Gary traveled to England for his doctorate, attending Cambridge University. During his time in England, he discovered a long lost work written by Shakespear that earned him international notoriety. Gary is the Dahl and Lottie Pryor Professor of Shakespear Literature at Florida State University.
One of the Hall of Fame staff members, Michael Homan, got to walk the Topeka High halls one more time, with his granddaughter and family at his side. Michael was a security guard for 35 years. He graduated from Silver Lake High School and entered the Air Force in the Air Police. Michael retired in 2013 as the Coordinator of Campus Police Sergeant.
“Very humbling,” Michael said. “But it’s quite an honor to be recognized for doing something I enjoyed. All the students I ever had were just so super. Even the ones who got in trouble on a regular basis were fun.”
The second distinguished staff member to be honored was Donald Madl. Donald was an English teacher who received a bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State University, getting a master’s degree from Fort Hayes State University. He started teaching at Topeka High School in 1958, and later Jardine Middle School. Donald retired in 1985 and passed in 2005.

Trump threatens to obliterate the Turkish economy

‘I’ve done before’. Trump tweeted after threatening to destroy the
economy of Turkey ‘if Ankara takes a planned military strike in Syria.’
This rogue Empire is destroying the economies of many countries and
their people by economic sanctions and threats of war. Now it is
Turkey’s turn, once a closed ally of the Evil Empire, now being treated
as an enemy for not wanting to do the dirty works
